Dad’s minor surgery

Friday, May 28th, 2004

His surgery went very well, they didn’t really find any infection, just some dead tissue which they cleared out. This is very good.

Also, he seemed to be feeling a lot better yesterday, true they had him on a good amount of drugs, but he was being silly and was sleeping too.

Very good things. We’re trying to figure out if he’s staying in the hospital over the long weekend or coming home soon.

Thanks again for your concern.

A little Clarity, please

Wednesday, May 26th, 2004

He seemed a lot clearer yesterday afternoon. They think that his rapid weightloss and the removal of the cancer has drastically changed the amount of diabetic medicine he may need, they are working on figuring out just where he needs to be for that. His electrolytes are also off, which is causing his arms and legs to ache.

He had an MRI last night, seems that there is some sort of infection, and they will likely do a small operation tommorrow to try to remove the bad stuff. He’s still in a good deal of pain, apparently the pain team has been called several times since 9 this morning, but hasn’t shown up yet to figure out what drugs he can have.

I’m going up there again tonight for a bit. Mom seems exhausted.

Dropped by K&M’s last night, and we talked Studio stuff till about 11! It was fun, but I was still tired from the last couple nights, heh. I’m going to try to hit the pillow earlier tonight.

Heading back up to the hospital

Tuesday, May 25th, 2004

I fell asleep last night on a little cot wedged into the corner of my father’s hospital room. My mother had gone home around 10:30pm to pick somethings up and perhaps nap. She woke me at 1:30pm, so I could go home and catch a few zzz’s before work.

When I called her this morning, I learned a few things. After I left my dad developed a fever, which is indicative of infection. Infection is really not a good thing so soon after a major surgery, once they figure out what kind it is, they’ll put him on the apropriate anti-biotics.

They are having trouble keeping his blood sugar up, and have him on some sort of glucose drip. Apparently the jerking of his limbs is due to low blood sugar. When he is awake, he’s in a good deal of pain, 8-9 on a scale of 10.

The doctors were supposed to confer sometime this afternoon.

I’m heading up to help my mom, and be with my dad.

Talk later.

Late night at the hospital

Tuesday, May 25th, 2004

Thank you all for your thoughts and wishes.

When I made it down to the hospital, he was still in the emergency center, getting an ultrasound, but shortly after I arrived they moved him up to the 6th floor to a temporary room.

He was in pretty rough shape, his blood sugar was really low, around 46 when the admitted him. (My father is diabetic, and usually his sugar is between 90-120) Also, he was experiencing kidney disfunction, and was shaking pretty much all night. (more like invouluntary jerks.) Early in the afternoon, he was hunched over in pain (back-kidneys?) and not making much sense (low sugar?), and throwing up. He was not a happy camper.

I was there till 1:30, but was able to nap a bit on a cot they brought in for my mom and wedged in the corner. They were feeding him lots and lots of sugar juices like orange and cranberry and apple, trying to get his levels up, and the last time they checked it seemed like he was near 100, which is much better.

Watching him fall in and out of sleep was heart wrenching, because even when dozing, his face would reflect the pain he feels, and emote like a baby’s does in sleep, making worried eyebrows, and pursed lips. When he was awake, he was lucid enough to have short conversations before he’d doze off again. Not sure why he kept falling asleep like that.

He seemed to be sleeping well when Mom came back to the hospital to spend the rest of the night by his side.

This is hard to take, he apparently had a really great weekend painwise, and was up and around and feeling the best he has in two weeks.

Mom will likely call me sometime this morning with more info.

Dad’s in the Emergency room! :(

Monday, May 24th, 2004

My father had some sort of toxic reaction, and has been trying to get admitted the emergency room all afternoon. He’s there now with mom. I’m heading up there after i pick up some things for her.

:(

They say he’s lucid and doing ok, and it sounds like they are going to detox him a bit.

My mom had been trying to get a hold of me, but it was my grandmother who finally did. She made things sound very dire, and I don’t know how dire things are, but I’m all shaken up for sure. When I called mom after my grandmothers call, mom seemed much calmer than me.

sigh.

anyway. had to get that out.

Sleepy Friday night

Friday, May 21st, 2004

its late, and I am writing from my laptop, up in the bedroom, sleeping husband beside me.

It is so very nice to have a laptop of my own, and it performs very well, even on it’s stock 256 memory.

i came home early today, because my work laptop has gone kaput. we hope to get it fixed soon, but i couldn’t do much just sitting around while they worked on it.

I got to eat lunch with my mother and grandma and grandpa. My grandparents were very excited about a discovery program they watched about the new seven wonders of the world. It’s very cool to hear them go on about those things, be enthused, and still learning and open to learning at their age.

The meal was fine, and everyone talked about things from mathematics, the new seven wonders, dogs and cats from the past, and static electricity.

News on my dad says that the radiation he received is making it harder for his body to heal in that area, he in a considerable amount of pain. We knew this was likely, but it’s always hard to experience these things.

I’ll try to write about acen tommorrow.

I think it’s time to join my husband in the dreaming lands.

Dream well

Going to Acen

First, Elf Pinup!

Second! Our zines rock, we spent all last weekend working on them, and they are beautiful.

Anyway, it’s been a long 2 weeks. I’ve either been at the hospital, or working on our zine. Strange times blending into each other.

My Dad’s surgery was very successful. The pathology came back with only a handful of live cancer cells left, and none around the margins. They had expected to see hundreds! This is great news.

Also, Dad came home last night! No more hospital. It’s so nice to see him up and about, and at home.

We’re heading out to acen within the next half hour. I just wanted to update before the con, because there is always too much to update after!

Later!
