Good Day, Sunshine

Tuesday, August 31st, 2004

Work:
I’m having a productive day today. Feels good to be improving the website. Tiny things, cleaning up little things. Things few people will recognize as changed, but changes that now make buttons in some areas act the same way as buttons in other areas.

Thank goodness! I’m keep all the navigation in one central place, so I don’t have to change 30 pages with a nav bar in them because a link changes.

Comic:
Last night, Studio Anti Thesis got together to make the final touchups for our new zine. This is really the best quality of my pages we can make. Pete tweaked some of the lower res scans and somehow made the linework highres again, and Kim shaded my early pages with the shades that I use in the later pages. I spent a lot of time going through and making them print ready, at Pete’s bequest. Taking out the fake screentones, as the printer will actually create something similar, and we don’t want any nasty moire patterns.

They really look good. We likely won’t touch these pages again, after we go to print, for a long time. I predict the next time we’ll even look at these files will be when the whole 32 pages of Tabloid are done, and we want to collect them into one ‘big’ book.

Family:
Tonight, I have birthday celebrations with my Mother In Law, and fam. Should be fun. Husband’s stepsister is also in the country tonight. (She works in Germany)

Today is my birthday

Tuesday, August 24th, 2004

Today is my birthday, but it’s a bit stretched out due to scheduling with a variety of people groups.

Sunday I got to go out to dinner with Jason and Stephanie, and they, being the sneaky cool people they are, surprised me with a card, a digi-charat manga compliation, and a really yummy three layered candle.

Monday I got to hang out with Heather, where she also surprised me with a kick-ass card, and an introduction to Edo. That means, of course, super awesome sushi dinner, and great conversation, as usual. We even managed to sneak in a walk with Jane, which was also lovely and eerie wonderful, at about 9:45pm, with the moon gazing down at the lake.

Tonight is Birthday time with my family! And who knows what else this week has in store.

These are good times, all.

yah!

Ren Faire with Sara

Jaen and Sara @ Bristol

Out of the blue last week, Sara got a hold of me. I’d been emailing her for months, but didn’t know she didn’t have net access, and I had misplaced her number.

Turns out, she had misplaced my number too! It was good to chat, and she invited me out to the Bristol Ren Faire on Saturday.

It was a beautiful day for Ren Fairing. It was warm enough, but not too hot, with a good breeze. I haven’t been back to the faire for quite a lot of time. We missed last summer completely, and hadn’t planned on going this summer. Thankfully, Sara came to the rescue, and even helped me into my bodice and other things(we used my red cape as a skirt), so I could go to the faire, and feel pretty and fun.

We had a rather nice time, with the sun filtering down through the trees. I got a new green skirt(pictured), and a pretty bracelet made of chainmail links and green beads, and a great matching anklet that has tiny little silver bells and green beads.

It’s so funny, with both of us in bodices, we didn’t have much room for the yummy foods at the faire. We figured out a system though, we got small orders of things and split them; sauteed garlic mushrooms, almonds roasted in cinnamon, and homemade teriyaki jerky. (I think that’s all) We also made a stop for some sassafras. yum!

Speaking of bodices, we had to loosen mine after a stop at the flutemakers. After trying to make the flute sound, several times, I started feeling quite faint. No wonder women in the ages of more restrictive clothing were always swooning.

It was also nice to sit down and watch a couple shows. When we were going several times a summer, my husband and I stopped going to the shows as often. It was a real treat to watch the professional insulter, ‘Lady…you should be a nun…’, and Sir William Shakespeare’s 15 min Hamlet, ‘He’s acting crazy, licking the walls and talking to his booties’, and we even got to see the Joust to the Death at the end of the day.

We sat in the grass, on the quarter of the arena, and cheered for the lesser evil guy, until he was doublecrossed by the eviler guy.

I’d really missed the Faire. So glad I could check it out this summer. Also glad to reconnect with Sara.

No one is under any obligation here, but I do share my list each year, so I know it’s of some interest. My birthday is next week, August 24th. I sent this list to my husband, who was supposed to propagate it to appropriate parties. I don’t currently have any birthday plans. Balloon Chasing

Balloon Chase Shot

Friday night I had the best date with my husband.

We ate out at Applebees, and then chased balloons all over the county. Driving out of the parking lot after dinner we saw balloons in the sky, and I remembered that the Eyes on the Skies balloon festival was going on over at the Alliant center.

We drove over towards that part of town and suddenly there were a half dozen hot air balloons ascending into the cloud dotted skies. It was beautiful.

I’ve chased balloons down quite a bit with my Mom. It’s one of my favorite things to do, but I’m not sure my husband ever really understood how much fun it can be to try to chase a balloon to where it lands, twisting and turning, trying to find roads that go where the balloons are flying over.

It was fantastic too, with him driving, and me shooting pictures out the window, both of us twisting around to try to get a glimpse of our current ‘marks’. We chased the pespi balloon down first, It flew out to fitchburg, I think, and for about ten min or so, it felt like we were the only ones in pursuit. Of course, nearer to the landing, we were suddenly surrounded by other vehicles driving as crazy as we were, and even the official Pepsi Pursuit truck. As we tried to get to where the pepsi balloon appeared to be heading, there were mothers with children, and dogs, in tow, racing down the street.

I hung out a window, to ask a roundish youngster if there was a park nearby, and he yelled out ‘Yeah, there’s one just over there, that’s where thye’re going to land!!’, and then he ran beside and after us as we whipped around the corner and headed where everyone else seemed to be heading.

We parked curbside, just in time to see the Pepsi balloon drifting over the houses and trees, and the over the park equipment, aiming for the soccer field. We jumped outta the jeep, and joined the kids racing towards the landing balloon for more pictures. It was crazy, there was so much excitement in the air, kids squealing with joy, dogs barking, and of course, me grinning from ear to ear. Several balloons touched down at that same park, so many many people had chased different balloons to get to the same place.

My husband thinks I’m a goof, of course, but loved seeing me so happy. I could tell he was really into it as well. Especially because, we weren’t done chasing. Several balloons couldn’t quite land at the same park, the wind lifting them up and over the clear open field.

So we jumped back into the Jeep, and started to follow the Re/Max Balloon, until we lost it, and then followed the pretty balloon viewed above, and it gave us a real run. They tried to land several times, but the wind kept swinging them further and further through the sky, over the beltline, and then over a little lake. The lake was a problem, because we couldn’t drive through it, and there were a lot of little dead end streets that couldn’t turn right.

At one point we started heading onto the onramp for the beltline, realized that the balloon was heading over it, and made a u-turn, down through the median, and back up onto the offramp.

All that twisting and turning meant we just misssed the landing of our current mark, and they had flown so far over all the other landing places that we were the first and almost only people to meet the people who had landed half in and half out of a baseball field. (basket hit the fence and bent it a bit).

The strangest thing happened when we walked up to them, one of the women strode right up to my husband and asked him what he was doing ‘here’.

Turns out, he had intructed her in his class that very day! What an amazing coincidence.

It was really really an awesome night. You never know where you’ll end up when you go chasing Hot Air Balloons.

Tonight it all feels possible.

Monday, August 16th, 2004

Today was a marvelous day. I got a lot of things figured out at work, a whole new section to go up as soon as it gets approved. I weighed in at Weight Watchers, and have lost 1.6 lbs since last week, had a fun dinner with my mom, and then made it to Publish or Perish at the Company of Thieves.

I’ve been having trouble writing this summer, so much stuck in my head, work, other things, and every word was so hard to place on the page.

Tonight was so much better. The short story I’ve been hammering on seems to be settling into a nice cadence. It feels very nice to be creative. I feel like I can finally have the creative space and energy to write and draw again.

I’m flying, creatively. I told them it might have been the caffeine from my Thieves Mocha, but I know it’s not true. I am happily surrounded by creative people, doing creative things, and looking forward to more creative things.

Feels real good.

Now I’m over at K&M’s, watching a bit of Kill Bill 2.

This qualifies as the best monday I’ve had in a long time.
