bleh

I spent 5 hours of today trying to get a database hooked up to a webpage and connected on my mac.

+ I have now enabled php and installed mysql on Kotoko, my ibook.
- I am not done with the thing I was going to finish and send off to the guy from my interview callback on friday.
+ during that interview, neither he nor I could get a database hooked up to the webpage, mostly because he hadn’t properly set up the data connection.
- this is a stupid stupid thing to test. once a connection is set up, you don’t have to remember how to set it up, you either include it in each file or paste as needed.
- after finally getting the db working in mysql on kotoko, i am very very far behind on this task, and pretty much wasted all of my sunday, and I’m all worked up and frustrated. :P
+ at least my temp work does not start until 10 tommorrow.
+ also, I am happy not to have to do transcription tommorrow, because of already being signed up for the temp work that starts at 10.
-friday afternoon, I transcribed for 4 hours, which was interesting enough, I guess, but hurt my hands, and I was hooked up to a tape recorder! with a pedal!
- also, was transcribing for a company I interviewed with, who turned me down earlier this summer.

Temporary Girl

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

So… I’m temping, I’m doing receptionist work mon-wed, filing thursday and transcription friday. The work is pleasant enough, and keeps me busy. I am, really tired.

I am also quite down about not hearing back from several places I’ve submitted my resume to.

I’m set up for 1-2 weeks though, starting monday, at a place where a friend works, so… that’s how things stand.

I need a personal cheerleader. Cheer has been low recently.

Carlo is cooking steak and rolls tonight, though, which is pleasant.

2006 Madison Zine Fest

We had a great time yesterday at the Madison Zine Fest. We got to see some great zinsters, including Billy - The Bunnyman from Loop Distro and Brian Defferding who does the amazing School: A Ghost Story comic (and who Kim and I made blush, after we totally gushed over his well written spooky books).

We had a great panel about Minicomic Zines with the lovely and talented Lynn .

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Sometime in the day Kim and I got interviewed by some local highschool students about zines and freespeech, which was fun too.

It was generally a wonderful time, which began with homemade waffles with real whipped creme at and ’s home, and ended with deep dish chocolate pie at Monty’s Blue Plate, also with whipped creme. Great day overall. I think it’s awesome that we get to have the zine fest in Madison each year, it’s great to do things local. This year it had the most people ever, and the quality of many of the zines are fantastic!

More pics of the Zine Fest in my Flickr set!

Travel. Interview, Comrades

Saturday, October 21st, 2006

After my interview last week, I was spirited off to Ohio by my mom. It was a whirlwind of family, and back again. I saw almost all my cousins(and their kids!), and my mom got to go her class reunion. I drove part of the 8 hours back, and I must say… I have officially driven stick for too long. You know this when you try to clutch on an automatic vehicle your mom has just bought. eee! Almost had to tie my left leg to the seat, to keep from clutching the brake.

Monday, one cousin I didn’t see in Ohio was actually in Madison, so we did dinner over at Mom’s and then went out to The Great Dane, it was great to see her, even though I was still travel-tired from the long weekend.

Thursday!!! I had an interview for a job that really suits me. I feel I did the best I could, and really am crossing my fingers and holding my breath for it.

Thursday was also Kim’s birthday, and there were margaritas, quesadilla’s and chocolate torte truffel birthday cake to be had, and we snuck some Heroes fan moments in there too.

whew. things fly by so fast, I want to remember, so I jot them down.

new thursday, new interview

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

ooh, it is winnnnndy out there, and cold! and there are icicles on some of the trees!!!

Had an interview with a different company today, for usability testing. Interviewer was really cool. Could be interesting work.

Have a neat interview next thursday.

I’m heading to Ohio for the weekend, my Mom is heading to her high school reunion, and I’m tagging along. Will see some family, and get to hang with mom, while hubby holds down the fort here.

eee, gotta finish packing! Have a great weekend, my friendies.

Had an interview today

Jewelboxing portfolio outside.

It’s a beautiful day for a drive, the leaves are changing all over and the air is cool but the sun still warm.

I had an interview on the west side this afternoon. It went well. I have a lot of things they are looking for regarding web, and the position may offer up to 50% actual work on print. That’s exciting. To be able to continue web, but also learn and grow in marketing and promotions. Could be awesome.

I redid my portfolio http://portfolio.metahari.com, and made a jewelboxed cdr to hand the interviewer. The portfolio has been reskinned, margins adjusted, and edited for a clearer look at my best works. Please give it a new look and feel free to share comments and critiques.

Quiet Elf

Quiet Elf

I bought a cheap set of tube watercolors and some brushes yesterday on my way back from paying rent. I cut a piece of water color paper in 4 and painted 3 of the quarters. These are my first experiements in watercolor. For the third one, I was a bit more brave, and quickly sketched a portrait of a quiet elf. Then I started with some pale blue shadows, and worked several layers into the hair. Mixing the color for the skin was the hardest, but I learned that even something too dark can be moderated with some water, or lifted with a bit of paper towel. She seems to be contemplating something.

I learned.
*It’s hard to get enough water into my plastic pallette
*I have a lot to learn about color mixing.
*Some of my marker skills do transfer
*I don’t have fear of watercolors
*Masking tape works just fine for taping things down.
*Watercolor goes pretty quick on these small pieces, and I can see myself doing lots of small ones for fun.
*Chinese white smells different than the rest of the tubes.
